About

The Salem County Art League (SCAL) exists thanks in part to funding from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a division of the department of State, the Salem County Board of County Commissioners, and the Salem County Cultural and Heritage Commission.

Mission Statement

The Salem County Art League (SCAL) is a non-profit organization that provides education and awareness of the fine arts. We seek to promote the talent and the skills of artists in our area. Our goal is to meet the needs of all cultural backgrounds and ages with flexible programs.

Our History

The Salem County Art League (SCAL) exists thanks in part to funding from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (Department of State), a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, and through the support of the Salem County Board of Commissioners and the Salem County Cultural and Heritage Commission.

SCAL began with a simple conversation during a watercolor class taught by Alex Alampi, Jr. in Richwood, NJ. When the idea of attending a Gloucester County Art League meeting came up, Alex remarked, “It’s a shame there isn’t a Salem County Art League.” Student Donna Clement responded, “Well, why don’t we start one?” With the enthusiastic support of the class, the Salem County Art League was born.

Since then, SCAL has grown into a formally recognized organization, registered as a New Jersey Non-Profit Corporation. We are proud to hold 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status through the IRS. Please note that, due to this status, artists are individually responsible for any sales tax on work sold at SCAL events.

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the arts—you don’t need to be a Salem County resident. The public is always welcome at general meetings and select events.
