Prospectus
Artists, here is an opportunity to paint En Plein Air in Woodstown NJ! The Salem County Art League, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, have teamed up with the Squirrel’s Nest Art Studio, Farmers and Bankers Brewery, and the Borough of Woodstown to bring you this event. Nestled in rural Salem County south New Jersey is the beautiful Historic Borough of Woodstown. The Borough boasts buildings from colonial time, dozens of Victorian homes, picturesque old buildings, quaint small-town center, a Vintage 1915 style High School, turn of the century bank buildings, an opera house that originally opened in 1885, several lovely churches, lakes, and a steam railroad that runs through the town. Paint Woodstown is a one-day, Quick Draw style plein air painting event with general awards and an option to be juried into a chance to win a Special Award. - Date: The Event will be held Saturday July 11, 2026. There is no Rain Date. Event will be held Rain or Shine.
- Time: 8:00 AM sign-in begins. Painting and framing time is between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. 4:00 PM Awards ceremony begins.
- Where: Sign-in is at Squirrel’s Nest Art Studio, 9 North main Street, Woodstown, NJ
- Eligibility: The event is open to artists 18 years old or older, beginner, amateur, professional. Note: Artists will be asked to sign an accident waiver and release of liability form at the time of sign in. This also requires they certify that there are no health-related reasons or problems which preclude their participation in this activity.
- Mediums: oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, ink, and pastel.
- Supplies: Artists need to bring their own painting supplies, materials, substrates, tools, and equipment. Substrates must be stamped at sign-in to be eligible for awards. Substrate may be tinted with a solid color. Artists must provide frame (and mat for works on paper) and are required to frame their work and prepare it for wired hanging display. Work space for framing will be available at the Squirrel’s Nest Art Studio. Exception is DRY painted edges on gallery wrapped canvas or cradled panels does not require framing, but must be wired for hanging. No saw tooth hangers.
- Registration Required: Registration is through https://showsubmit.com/show/scal-paint-woodstown-plein-air. Artists should print out their receipt for their records.
— Early-bird and Regular Sign up and Early-bird and Regular Juried Registration options are available.
— Juried artists will be notified by ShowSubmit of status. All registered Artists (Early, Late, Juried selected, Juried Not selected) compete for general awards, only the up to 20 selected juried artists will be competing for the special award as well as the general awards. - Awards: Special Award is Minimum $500 Max TBD. General awards 1st – $300. 2nd – $200. 3rd – $100. HM – $50.
Rules
- Paid Registration is Required. Please read all rules before registering.
- $20 Early Bird Registration fee (non-refundable). Qualifies artist to compete for general awards.
- $30 Regular Registration fee (non-refundable). Qualifies artist to compete for general awards.
- $40 Early Bird Registration + Jury Fee (non-refundable). Qualifies artist to compete for general awards and to be considered by jury for the special award.
- $50 Regular Registration + Jury Fee (non-refundable). Qualifies artist to compete for general awards and to be considered by jury for the special award. — Early Bird Registration: May 11 – June 23, 2026 — Regular Registration: June 24 – July 1, 2026 — Jury Registration (both tiers): May 11 – July 1, 2026 — Entry Deadline: 11:59 PM PT, July 1, 2026 — Jury Notifications: By July 8, 2026 — Event: July 11, 2026
Sign-in Location: Squirrel’s Nest Art Studio, 9 North Main St, Woodstown, NJ 08098
- Sign in time 8:00-10:00 includes getting your canvases, paper, panels, stamped. Artists may get up to four stamped, but may only submit two for judging. Substrate may be tinted, with a solid color, no image, prior to stamping.
- Paint time 10:00-3:00 (includes frame and return time)
- Frame time 2:00-2:30 (Framing space will be provided at the Squirrel’s Nest.)
- Return time 2:30-3:00 (must return with art, framed suitable for hanging)
- Art will be judged from 3:00-4:00
- Awards ceremony begins at 4:00 at Farmers and Bankers Brewery across the street from the Squirrel’s Nest.
Artists must be 18 or older to participate.
Artists may use Oils, Acrylics, Gouache, Watercolor, Ink, or Mixed Media
Artists must work within designated town limits (in or around Woodstown).
- Artists may not block sidewalks, driveways, roadways, or use private property (without obtaining permission from owner).
- Artists shall bring water with them if needed for painting use. The Squirrel’s Nest can provide water, but artists must provide the container.
- Artists are responsible for their safety in selecting their painting locations such as, but not limited to, awareness of traffic patterns near them, stable footing, appropriate caution in traveling to and from their painting location.
- Woodstown NJ weather is generally hot and often humid in July, artists are recommended to plan accordingly, also to realize they could be in sunlight for several hours, so plan for creating needed shade, large brim hat, umbrella, long sleeve UV shirts, etc.
- Artists need to bring their own supplies, materials, tools, and equipment.
- Artists need to bring frames and any framing tools, mats, tape, hanging hardware needed. (A location for framing will be provided at the Squirrel’s Nest).
- Artists need to bring their own trash bags for their use.
- Oil and solvent rags are to be disposed of properly.
All work submitted for judging must be framed or gallery wrapped and must have hang wire installed for hanging. Gallery wrapped edges must be dry (use acrylic paint on edges) when submitted to allow for handling, otherwise work must be framed.
Artists may submit one or two paintings for judging.
SCAL reserves the right to decline artworks that do not fall within the defined scope of this competition or are deemed inappropriate. Entries that do not adhere to all guidelines will not be judged or be eligible for awards.
Artist may place their artworks up for sale. Sales are through the Squirrel’s Nest Art Studio. Commission on sales, 70% to the artist, Squirrel’s Nest collects 30%.
Artists are invited (space permitting) to hang works not sold during the event at the Squirrel’s Nest on their Gallery Wall from July 11th through August 15, 2026. Sales during this time are the same percentages 70%/30% as above. Art not sold will be available for pickup by the artist between August 15 and August 19, 2026. All work shall be removed by the artist by August 19, 2026.
